New Season, Same Hope

New Season, Same Hope
By: Jessica Noonan

I am filled with excitement as the end of summer gives way to the beautiful season of fall. It’s a time of new beginnings and fresh starts, a chance to do things differently and better. September brings a wave of change – a new school year, a new GPA season, a new church bible study, and a new schedule of after-school activities for my children. And let’s not forget the brand new pumpkin candle waiting to be lit, symbolizing the cozy ambiance of the season.

Most people would probably tell you they don’t like change. Some reasons why might be the adjustments, learning curves, and shortcomings that can come with change. In my own times of big life changes, I’ve found it helpful to appreciate and lean into the aspects of my life that hadn’t changed–friends, family, the ability to dance, and, of course, Jesus.

Agnes De Mille, choreographer of famous ballets and musicals, once wrote in her autobiography, “Ballet never becomes easier; it becomes possible.” The technique, grace, and musicality needed to create even the most basic movements of ballet is completely unnatural to the typical human body.

God is our master choreographer, and He always sets us where He has chosen us to be. He gives us specific gifts and talents, and it is our differences in our talents that allow us to move in synchronization together. Just like each corps de ballet dancer moves on a different count of music or stands in a different location to the dancer beside her, the corps du Christ member must take on different roles and actions to the members beside them.

New Wine and New Shoes

We tend to get excited for certain new items in life, such as a new car, new pair of shoes, new phone, or new haircut. In most cases, we choose these changes of newness, particularly if it means we will be more comfortable, efficient, and/or stylish. However, there are also possessions, relationships, and practices in our lives we cherish as they have been, and which we would rather not replace with something new.

When Kaya and I met up in August of 2021 to talk about her position as our Biblical Research & Ministry Specialist, I could see she had so much to share with our community. We talked and as I listened to her, it was clear God had gifted her with a heart for learning and knowledge and sharing that learning and knowledge with those around her.
